skies and also nice to throw a little breeze in there. look for highs to be very close to yesterday's numbers but coming down slightly. here is sal. steve, good morning. northbound 101 looks pretty good approaching the 80 split. san francisco much calmer than it has been. also the morning commute looks pretty good on westbound bay bridge coming up to the bay gates. it's 4:59 let's gone go back to the desk. we begin with protestors who smashed windows and splattered paint in downtown oakland leaving a lot to clean up this morning. tara moriarty is live at city hall in oakland. one of the many buildings protestors vandalized last night. >> reporter: yes some of the windows that protestors smashed have been bordered up at this time. but there is still a hole here in the front door of city hall that remains exactly as it was last night. demonstrators threw paint balls and smashed windows at city hall. the national berkeley lab office and three banks.

the group of about 200 people gathered at frank ogawa plaza last night. they timed the rally to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan. around 7:15 the group headed north on west grand avenue. circled back to city hall and that is when the violence broke out. some luxury cars were also vandalized. >> just because we have a nice car, i don't know. we worked hard for our money. >> we live in oakland and to see our hometown come to shambles like this. >> reporter: the march only lasted 40 minutes and that did not give police enough time to call in mutual aid or make enough arrests. there is a security presence here at city hall to make sure nobody tries to break in. we'll of course keep you updated if we hear anymore information. live in oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. if you thought gas prices were high over the weekend,

guess what, they went up again while you were sleeping overnight. ktvu channel 2 reporter matt keller is in our newsroom with on how the governor is trying to step in to help. good morning, matt. >> reporter: we just got the new numbers. for the third straight day the average price for a gallon of regular hit another all time high at $4.67 a gallon. of course in the bay area you are paying a few cents more at $4.71 a gallon. drivers are frustrated at the high costs. especially compared to the rest of the country. now governor jerry brown is trying to help by ordering state smog regulators to allow winter blend to be sold in california earlier than usual to bring down prices. winter blend gas isn't typically sold until october 31st. he hopes by selling it now it would increase supplies by bringing down prices. the high prices are changing driving habits. >> i try not to drive unless i really have to. >> i'm grateful and i only use

the bike when necessary. >> reporter: the dramatic surge in prices came after a southern california refinery went down a week ago. it came back online friday. analysts say they expect prices to stabilize in the coming days. now this might make you feel a little better this morning. a gas station in long beach has the priciest gas at $6.66 a gallon. it could be worse. it may be a sign of the times, roseville police are investigating the theft of nearly 1,000 gallons of gas from a shell station. stations manager says security cameras caught the thief stealing gas on three different occasions. police say a man in a pickup truck somehow disabled the meter and pumped gas into a tank in the bed of his truck. president obama will be back in san francisco to raise even more money for his reelection campaign. the president will begin a day

in the valley. then he will head to the bay area for three fundraisers. the first is a small event. followed by two fundraisers at the bill graham civic auditorium. and a concert with john legend. the president attended fundraisers in los angeles yesterday following a concert featuring john bob joe i have, stevey wonder and jennifer hudson. republican presidential nominee mitt romney is scheduled to deliver sam foreign policy -- deliver a foreign policy speech today. the changes romney said he would make in middle east policy. early voting in california. if you want to vote early head

to your county election office. most offices will be closed today because of columbus today. ballots for those voting by mail will be sent tomorrow. 32 states and the district of columbia offer some form of early voting. u.s. park police officers shot at a would-be car thief who is accused of trying to run him over. it started at 6:30 saturday night when officers saw the suspect trying to steal a car on lincoln boulevard. investigators say the suspect jumped into a tan buick that was waiting nearby and drove toward the officer. the police are looking for that vehicle. a judge will soon decide whether or not to postpone pg&e pipeline hearings. the ongoing hearings follow the deadly explosion in san bruno two years ago. on friday the california public utilities commission filed a motion to postpone the hearings until next month. jerry hill says he will ask the judge to reject that request. power has been restored to thousands of customers in hayward following a crash that took out a power pole.

a driver hit a power pole near cheney lane around 3:00 yesterday morning. at the height of the outage about 5,000 customers were out power. let's see how traffic is looking on the east shore freeway. normally the busiest freeway around the bay area. >> right now it's looking okay. it is getting busy though as you mentioned as you drive through vallejo. right here in berkeley it looks good. it hasn't been a really bad drive at all. as a matter of fact, it continues to be a nice drive on 24 and on 580. also getting to this area. if you are leaving the house, you don't have to worry about road work. the richmond, san rafael bridge traffic looks very nice. as you are new to the bay bridge teleplay traffic looks good. today should be a much easier day in san francisco after the last few. it has been tough finding parking. even bart should return to normal levels. the morning drive is looking pretty good if you are driving

on the livermore valley commute. westbound 580 that looks good. as we take a look at the nimitz freeway traffic looks good. and then the southbound traffic that is a soar nice drive. driving into the south bay if you are on the peninsula it should be no trouble getting to the airport. and san francisco we saw that northbound 101 traffic still looks good and so does 280 getting into the downtown area. there is no baseball game today in the bay area. 5:07 let's go to steve. >> sal, thank you. a very good morning under clear skies. our little low has been here for two plus weeks. just been -- it needs something to move it along and it's finally happening. it looks like it will come close to the bay area by tomorrow and start to go right parallel to the coast. sunny and breezy day. chilly morning no doubt. 40s and low 50s for many. this system might give us a few high clouds later on today. i think overall a sunny to mostly sunny day.

it's a new development in the death of u.s. ambassador to libya chris stevens. a new development shows the threats he faced in benghazi libya. the daily beast obtained a cable obtained by stevens. the diplomatic message shows how dangerous it was to rely on libyan force for security. the cable was september on september 11th the day stevens died. u.s. information coming in this morning surrounding that deadly shoot of course a u.s. border federal -- shooting of a u.s. border patrol agent. he apparently opened fire on two of his colleagues thinking they were armed smugglers. he was killed when the other agents returned fire. agents were in the area checking on a sensor that had gone off. the shooting happened in a

hilly area known for illegal trafficking. police in colorado say a backpack found in denver suburb likely belonged to a missing ten-year-old girl. it was found about six miles from jessica ridgeway's home. she was last seen leaving for school on friday. she was not reported missing for eight hours because her mother works the overnight shift and missed calls from the school. republican presidential nominee mitt romney will once again go after president obama today. this time attacking the president's foreign policy. as ktvu jacqueline fell reports. romney will tell voters romney will do things differently if he is elected. >> reporter: it could be a big day for the republican presidential candidate mitt romney. the latest poll debate shows the race is tied. mitt romney picking up a couple points from his debate

performance last week. now we are expected to learn more today about the republican challenger foreign policy plans. romney will tell voters at a rally in virginia how he would change course if elected. if expected he would go after the president of handling in attacks. the obama campaign is already fighting back. a spokesperson says we're not going to be lectured by someone who has been an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy. now more on what romney is expected to say at his virginia rally in another hour and why we are talking about foreign policy just a month from the election when of course the economy is the biggest ticket item. reporting in washington jacqueline fell ktvu channel 2 news. it's been called the worst wild fire season on record and the forest service ran out of money to fight the flames. at the end of august funding ran out to pay for the firefighters, fire trucks, and aircraft that fight the flames so the department of agricultural which runs the forest service borrowed from

other forest management programs the ones that aim to prevent the big fires to begin with. congress only provided half the $1 billion it costs to fight the fires this year. new report is calling u.s. navies explanation for radiation contamination on treasure island inadequate. california health regulators says the report does not exemployer the possibility that the base may have been dusted with radio active ash or soaked with aid owe active sewage. . the navy acknowledges the history was more wide spread than they thought. british researcher john gerdon were awarded the prize for discovering that certain cells of the body can be reprogrammed into stem cells. it's a discovery that scientists hope to turn into

armed doping. taking blood out a month before a race and reinjecting it to increase oxygen. the political world is remembering former lieutenant governor and congressman mervyn dymally. he worked as an organizer and janitor before entering politics. he served in both houses of the state legislature and spent more than a decade in congress. dymally passed away over the weekend in los angeles. he was 86. big crowds turned out to be big business in san francisco this weekend with almost a dozen major events happening in the city, hotel rooms were all booked up. that left some people searching for other options in other nearby cities. cab drivers and sightseeing tours say their profits were triple what they would normally get on a given weekend. the cash is welcome and a big boost for the local economy. >> this is our busiest weekend of the year.

this is is a look at the westbound bay bridge that traffic looks pretty good coming up to the pay gate. we're seeing a little bit more crowding now. coming up on 5:30 let's go back to the desk. san francisco police say many of the protestors arrested on saturday were suspected in a similar protest last month. these are some of the 11 men and nine women police rounded up on california and battery streets in san francisco. officers say they were wearing black clothing and masks and tried to conduct a march on market street without a permit. this is video of the police moving in to arrest the protestors. they are accused of trying to block the road and damage cars and businesses. people that support the protestors say officers should not have been so violent during the arrest. >> cops were hitting people and shoving batons into people and slamming people around. >> definitely reasonable force. officers were confronted with

projectiles. >> police added one officer was hurt when he was hit in the head by something the protestors flew. many damages businesses and a police station in a similar protest in the mission district last month. in overnight news oakland police are investigating a shooting that left one person injured and it happened just after 11:00 last night on church street. police say the victims showed up at the east mont police station in a car that was riddled with bullets. you see there. we don't know the victims condition this morning. and so far no arrests have been made. an investigation is under way after a body was found inside a car in east oakland. the body was found around 5:00 yesterday afternoon at richy and olive street. police say the body was wrapped in cloth and appeared to have been in the car for awhile. investigators have not yet said if the body is of that of a male or female. nation-wide outbreak of meningitis is spreading. dozens of people have been

infected. coming up what that outbreak is being linked to. gas prices went up yet again while you were sleeping overnight. matt keller is in the newsroom with more on how the governor is trying to step in and help the situation. >> reporter: governor brown believes his latest move will stop the rapid rise. he ordered state smog regulators to allow winter blend to be soldier than usual. it's typically sold after halloween. few refineries outside of california are making summer blend gas. when a refinery here in the state goes down like it did a week ago in southern california the prices surged to record highs. for some people driving is their jobs and these prices are hurting businesses. >> and the price of the fare still the same. so i'm really taking the heat. >> reporter: aaa reported this morning that the average price for a gallon of gas rose for

the third straight day. hitting another record high at $4.67 a gallon. they predict the average price could peak as high as $4.85 before coming back down. reporting live in newsroom matt keller ktvu channel 2 news. state regulators are cracking down on two companies that claim to be a high-tech alternative to taxis. the california public utilities commission ordered -- to make sure drivers are properly licensed, screened, and insured to carry passengers. according to a notice sent to the companies, the commission has the right to impound cars and impose fines of up to $5,000 a day or even jail time. it's the day pumpkin growers have been waiting for. allie rasmus is joining us now from the half-moon bay pumpkin weighoff where growers are competing for $25,000 prize and a chance to set a world record.

allie. >> reporter: they will get that $25,000 prize if they beat the world record. but the stage is set behind us in downtown half-moon bay. the weigh off doesn't start for a few more hours but you can see some of the top contenders have arrived. and all of these pumpkins you see here are at least 1400 pounds. now the growers are competing for thousands of dollars in prizes. last years first prize winner took home an $11,000 prize. he had a 1700-pound pumpkin. but thad is one of the top competitors. can you tell us how big you think it is? how much it weighs? >> boy we don't like to guess at this point. i'm going to guess it's going to be a personal best. that's as far as i'm going. >> reporter: you told me

earlier you are a little superstitious about getting ahead of yourself and estimating what it will be. it's fair to judge it's at least 1600 pounds? >> yeah. we hope for the best and fear for the worst. >> reporter: what does it take to grow something like this? >> a whole summer of work. there is many many hours that go into this. we spend all summer with them. >> reporter: and you've been here before. you are pretty experienced. >> yeah. this is my favorite way. i try to make it down here as often as i can. >> reporter: what was the biggest challenge in growing this? >> the biggest challenge i grow a greenhouse. greenhouse has a lot of disease and pressures. just keeping it healthy. >> reporter: good luck to you. as we mentioned not only does the first prize winner get $6 for every pound their pumpkin weighs in at. you're talking about 1700-pound pumpkin that is an $11,000

prize. if someone breaks the world record, that grower will get a $25,000 extra prize. there is a lot of money at stake here. the bigoff starts at 7 -- the weighoff starts at 7:00 and we will be here to bring it to you. >> we'll see you at 7:00. thanks. the streets of san francisco should start to look normal again this morning after a very busy weekend in the city. despite having more than a million visitors in the city, things went pretty well. there is only one more event happening today. one big event. that is the final day of fleet week. other events included the castro street fair. the hardly strictly blues grass festival. and the san francisco 49ers and the giants of course at home playing. you can tell it was a busy weekend in the city by just looking at the traffic on the streets and the big crowds on public transportation. bart broke its weekend ridership record on saturday with more than 319,000

steps to bring down california sky high gas prices. he wants companies to transition into winter blend gas ahead of schedule which would make more gas available throughout the state. a special day was ruined when two wedding parties broke into a huge fight in a philadelphia hotel. police say they tried to stop the fight between two separate wedding parties early yesterday morning. a 57-year-old man reportedly the uncle of one of the brides suffered a heart attack an later died. three people were taken into custody. several others ended up in local hospitals. it's unclear how this all started. nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak is growing. there is at least 91 confirmed cases and seven deaths. the outbreak has been linked to a steroid used to treat back pain. it was produced by a specialty pharmacy in massachusetts and since been voluntarily recalled. health officials say thousands of people could have received
